I then navigated to the downloaded file (something like home/downloads - I forget the exact path) and opened the run file by appending a './' at the beginning to execute the binary. I then opened up a terminal window, and did a 'sudo -i' to give myself a terminal with root permissions. I then right clicked onto the file and changed to file permissions to allow it to be an 'executable' (otherwise you won't be able to run it). Using the Ubuntu desktop, I downloaded a copy of the Micron Storage Executive Tool. Basically this boots Ubuntu, but it does not install Linux onto your machine.
Next I booted into my new USB stick containing Ubuntu and started the 'Live CD' session. As an FYI, the Micron Windows tool did not work, so don't even bother to download it. I decided to then download Ubuntu to a USB stick and boot into their USB stick version without installing it on my machine. I then went onto the Micron site and noticed they had a Linux version of the Storage Executive tool.
The ISO Crucial/Micron provide does not work (an earlier version from Nov/Dec told me there were no upgrades, and latest version I downloaded today just boots into a grub shell and does nothing). Basically Crucial's support site is rubbish, and that is being rather generous. I have been literally pulling my hair out on this one and after a lot of thinking, I have been able to solve the problem.
